Two young women were fatally shot across from Sousa Middle School in Southeast Washington late last night, police said.

The circumstances of the shootings were unclear early today. Police received a report of gunshots fired in the 300 block of 37th Street SE, near Fort Dupont Park, about 11:40 p.m., homicide detective Kyle Cimiotti said.

It was not known whether the victims had been shot on the street or inside a nearby four-story, brick apartment building, but a girl's body was found on a sidewalk outside the building.

The second victim was taken to D.C. General Hospital, where she died a short time later.

The shooting victims were not immediately identified, but a woman who said she was the sister of the girl who was found on the sidewalk said she was 17. The girl had been shot in the upper body. The age of the second victim was unknown.

Police knew of no suspects or motives in the shootings. Lt. Jeannie Sullivan said a dispute may have begun in the hallway of the apartment building and then spilled outside.

No weapons were found, and the females were not believed to have shot each other.
