City Appoints Transportation Director
Richard J. Baier has been named director of Alexandria's Department of Transportation and Environmental Services, effective Feb. 1.
Baier, 36, is the public works director/city engineer for Clearwater, Fla. He will oversee construction and repair of all city streets, sidewalks and sewers, as well as the operation of the city's computerized traffic signal system.
Baier holds a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering and a master of science degree in engineering management from the University of South Florida in Tampa. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Institute of Transportation Engineers and is past president of the Florida Engineering Society.
Arts Group to Hold Grant Workshop
The Virginia Commission for the Arts will hold a two-hour grant workshop Jan. 31 in Annandale to offer information about its grant award programs in preparation for March 1 and April 1 application deadlines. The workshops will address application, review and funding procedures. Application forms and publications will be available.
The Virginia Commission for the Arts is a state agency that supports the arts through funding from the General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts. Grants are distributed to artists, arts and other nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, educators and local governments. The agency also provides technical assistance in arts management.
No preregistration is required, and attendance at a workshop is not required to apply for funding. The workshop starts at 11 a.m. at the Arts Council of Fairfax County, 4022 Hummer Rd., Annandale.
