An 81-year-old St. Mary's County man died Wednesday afternoon after he lost control of his car, drove off Mattapany Road and struck a utility pole, police said. John E. Beavers Jr., of Scotland, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Police are still trying to determine what caused Beavers to lose control of his car, but they said they do not believe speed or alcohol played a part. Beavers was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
Early Tuesday morning, a sport-utility vehicle driven by a North Beach woman and a van driven by a La Plata man collided at the intersection of Livingston and Billingsly roads, police said.
Audre Danielle Harris, 31, was severely injured in the crash that occurred about 5 a.m. She was flown to Prince George's Hospital Center, where she died the following day.
The driver of the van, Michael Ray McLaughlin, 43, was seriously injured and was treated at Prince George's Hospital Center.
Police said they were still investigating the cause of the collision.
