John F. Kelly, 71, a pediatrician who maintained offices in Alexandria from 1959 until retiring about 1996, died Jan. 21 at Manor Care nursing home in Arlington. He had diabetes.

In addition to his private practice, he was affiliated with Arlington Hospital and had been a clinical professor of pediatrics at Georgetown University's medical school.

Dr. Kelly, who lived in Falls Church, was born in Connecticut. He was a 1950 graduate of Georgetown University and a 1954 graduate of its medical school. He interned at a hospital in Connecticut and served his pediatrics residency at Georgetown University Hospital. He served with the Public Health Service from 1955 to 1958.

He had served as president of the Georgetown Clinical Society and executive secretary of the Hoya Hospital Club. He was a recipient of Georgetown University's Bicennial Medal and was a member of the Irish and American Pediatric Society, the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Knights of Columbus. His hobbies included the study of history.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Sheila M., of Falls Church; five sons, John F.X., of New Orleans, Joseph P., of Burke, Michael G., of Centreville, Kevin M., of South Boston, and Thomas J., of Tampa; two daughters, Susan M. Kelly of Falls Church and Anne Kelly of Springfield; and a brother.
