Why should the voters elect you?

"My record on behalf of District 21 and Maryland is what makes me a good candidate for reelection. Among the bills I sponsored and passed just last year was legislation to increase the tobacco tax to keep cigarettes out of the hands of children. Also, a bill to protect our precious water supply called the Water Conservation Act of 2002, which requires those applying for water permits to submit a proposal for conservation. I was instrumental in seeking the more than $1 billion in funding for the Prince George's County schools as delegation vice chair."

What would you like the voters to know about you?

"I pride myself on the service I offer my constituents. My office is open five days a week, and staff is always available."

"Over the many years of my service to the constituents of the 21st District, I have gained experience and earned leadership responsibilities that make me an effective legislator. My focus remains to support the improvements, now begun, of our educational system from elementary through college programs. As a member of the Judiciary Committee, I also see crime prevention and punishment as an area of importance to my community. Issues that affect the family concern me, leading to legislation on family violence, child abuse and neglect, child support enforcement, gun control and choice for women."

Kevin L. Bruening (R)

Age: 31

Residence: Laurel.

Education: University of Maryland.

Occupation: Financial consultant.

Elected offices/civic activities: Maryland Student Legislature; Maryland Legal Aid Association-Policy Forums; SPCA member and foster for stray, neglected and abused animals.

Why should the voters elect you?

"As an informed voter, you know change is essential in the political process. Lack of change leads to status quo, 'path of least resistance' decision-making. This has become epidemic in Maryland and in my district. Your vote has been taken for granted too long. I will place my constituents at the top of my priorities and not cut deals that harm them. Funding priorities here in the 21st District include providing a climate for economic growth so that you have skilled job opportunities close to home and reforming juvenile justice so that it offers opportunity, not despair."

What would you like the voters to know about you?

"As a member of the Maryland Student Legislature, I participated in crafting legislation leading to the adoption of the first national Education Savings Accounts."

Education: University of Maryland, 1980; Santa Rosa Junior College, 1962; State University of New York Cobleskill, 1957-58; Prince George's Junior College, 1990.

Occupation: Real estate agent.

Elected offices/civic activities: President, Laurel-Beltsville Hospital Auxiliary; vice president, Oakland Elementary PTA; recording secretary, Laurel Women's Republican Club, volunteer, Laurel Boys and Girls Club.

Why should the voters elect you?

"I have lived in Laurel area for 32 years. I am familiar with its problems as well as its appeal. I want to serve the community by advocating for a mass transit system around the Beltway with tracks leading to dense populations areas. I also want to advocate for an elected school that was grieviously and arrogantly disbanded by the legislature. The $2 billion debt left us by the Democrats is unconsionable. The average household has to balance its budget, so, too, should Maryland. I plan to include seniors to help in our schools wherever possible."

What would you like the voters to know about you?

"Laurel has been my home for 32 years. My husband, Clint, raised two great children, and we are blessed with two grandchildren."
