Residence: Douglas Park.

Education: MA, economics, University of Maryland; BS, political science and economics, American University.

Occupation: Chairman, Arlington County Board.

Elected offices/civic activities: Chairman, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority board of directors; member, Northern Virginia Transportation Authority; former chairman, Arlington County Neighborhood Conservation Advisory Committee; former member, Arlington County Parks and Recreation Commission; former member, Arlington County Planning Commission.

Why should the voters elect you?

"I have a proven record of accomplishment and leadership. Since my election to the County Board in 1996, I have led successful efforts to expand transit, improve air quality, enhance parks, sidewalks and trails, support schools, preserve affordable housing, protect neighborhoods and maintain top-quality public safety services. This year's budget lowered the property tax rate, making Arlingtonians the only Northern Virginia residents with no utilities tax and a property tax rate under $1 -- still keeping Arlington's highest-possible triple-A bond rating through responsible fiscal management. The Arlington police and firefighters unions, Arlington Education Association and Sierra Club endorse my reelection."

What would you like the voters to know about you?

"As a parent of three Arlington schoolchildren, I am committed to public education. Since I joined the County Board, school funding has increased 40 percent."

Mike W. Clancy (R)

Age: 45

Residence: Maywood.

Education: BA, government, with high honors, University of Notre Dame; JD, with honors, George Washington University.

Occupation: Lawyer, partner, Holland & Knight.

Elected offices/civic activities: Member, board of directors, and volunteer of the year, Arlington Food Assistance Center; member, executive board, Arlingtonians for a Better County; member, Economic Development Advisory Committee, Virginia Joint Commission on Technology and Science; delegate, Arlington County Civic Federation; volunteer, Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment; affiliate board member, Arlington Housing Corp.; past president, Ballston Towne West Community Association; PTA; volunteer basketball coach, Arlington parks deptartment; member, Arlington Committee of 100.

Why should the voters elect you?

"Arlington's government is a one-party monopoly that is indifferent to our community's priorities and has produced soaring property taxes (30 percent-80 percent increases in most neighborhoods), which threaten the economic security of senior citizens and families. It is time for change. I have a positive vision of government that is responsive and open to real debate. I will protect the residential character of our neighborhoods; ensure common-sense development (adequate parking, traffic flow, better roads, improved Metro service and traffic/pedestrian safety); restore accountability and fiscal responsibility; and provide meaningful property tax relief. I will put people first for real results."

What would you like the voters to know about you?

"Arlington County Employees' endorsement: 'Mike embodies the values, ideals and fiscal priorities that are important to the community. His commitment is to the people.' "
