Why should the voters elect you?

"My 23 years of government experience -- professional and non-paid -- have prepared me well for this position. Of the candidates running for the District 2 seat, none can match my level of direct government-related management and fiscal experience. My broad experience with large-scale budgets, ranging from $50 million to $30 billion, will allow me to step right into the county government's budget process. I am experienced, prepared and ready to address the problems of economic stagnation in older communities, lack of affordable housing, inadequate transportation and failing senior citizen programs. For more information, please review my Web site: www.daverakes.com."

What would you like the voters to know about you?

"I'm a devout and passionate man who cares about the future of Howard County. A servant leader, always placing the people's needs first."

Brian Harlin (R)

Age: 36

Residence: Ellicott City.

Education: Dowling University; Salisbury University; University of Maryland.

Occupation: Business owner.

Elected offices/civic activities: Safety Board for Montgomery Meadows.

Why should the voters elect you?

"I was fortunate enough to grow up in an area where people took responsibility for themselves and their neighbors, children could go out to play or to school and parents knew they were safe; a place where everyone received a first-rate education and traveling across town didn't mean sitting in traffic. My wife, Helen, and I searched long and hard to find an area to raise our children before we found our home in Howard County. I will work hard to ensure that District 2 remains a place that families can be proud to call home."

What would you like the voters to know about you?

"I have made an investment in District 2 with both my family's and my company's futures."
