Douglas M. Duncan* (D)

Age: 47

Residence: Rockville.

Education: BA, Columbia University.

Occupation: Montgomery County executive.

Elected offices/civic activities: Member, Rockville City Council, 1982-87; mayor, Rockville, 1987-93; Montgomery County executive, 1994-present.

Why should the voters elect you?

"As county executive, I have worked hard to improve education, address traffic congestion, keep our communities safe, and position Montgomery County and this region as an economic engine and biotechnology leader. We've improved delivery of basic services while holding the line on taxes. I instituted the first local earned income tax credit in the nation, expanded health care, and doubled spending on affordable housing. As part of our smart growth program, we've focused on revitalization of central business districts, with Silver Spring's urban renewal a premier example. But the job is not yet done."

What would you like the voters to know about you?

"I am committed to relieving traffic congestion, the single greatest threat to our quality of life."

Eric Anderson (R)

Age: 40

Residence: Darnestown.

Education: BS, business finance, University of Southern California, 1984; MBA, Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, 1994.

Occupation: Business operations consultant, e-Anderson Consulting.

Elected offices/civic activities: Nearly 20 years in providing nationwide private-sector business management expertise to a number of diverse industries such as financial services, health care, communications and, most recently, global information technology mergers and acquisitions.

Why should the voters elect you?

"Current elected officials have had eight years to show measurable progress in addressing Montgomery County's gridlock traffic and have failed. I will take immediate action to solve our transportation and infrastructure problems, eliminate bureaucratic waste, and improve the quality of family life. We do not need to raise taxes; we need a new, sensible leader who can manage within our current annual budget of nearly $3 billion. I will bring better-paying jobs to the county, manage residential growth and hold developers accountable to our neighborhoods, insist on education excellence, and introduce innovative solutions to resolve mental health issues."

What would you like the voters to know about you?

"I believe our taxes are high enough. We can solve our transportation problems without increasing the financial tax burden on Montgomery County taxpayers."
