Michael W. Burns (R)

Age: 44

Residence: Linthicum.

Education: BS, Towson University; JD, University of Maryland School of Law.

Occupation: Lawyer, sole practitioner.

Elected offices/civic activities: Maryland House of Delegates, 1995-99; House Judiciary Committee, ranking minority member, 1997-99; vice chairman, Anne Arundel County House Delegation, 1998-99; law clerk, Circuit Court for Baltimore City, 1983-84; legal counsel, Maryland Republican Party, 1987-88.

Why should the voters elect you?

"The incumbent has been in office for 14 years. Do you feel that you, your family and your community are safer today than when he took office in 1988? As state's attorney, I will implement Bob Ehrlich's Project Exile program, demanding mandatory sentences for felony crimes involving guns. I strongly support the death penalty and, unlike the incumbent, I will take all eligible cases to trial. Unlike the incumbent, I will not accept campaign contributions from criminal defense attorneys. My focus will include crimes against senior citizens and crimes occurring in specific communities, including Laurel, Crofton and Annapolis."

What would you like the voters to know about you?

"I have a wife and two small children, so getting criminals off our streets is a personal, as well as a professional, crusade for me."
