Why should the voters elect you?

"My priorities are education, public safety, growth management and revitalizing older neighborhoods and business corridors. As your current councilman, I'm pleased to say we have accomplished a lot over the last four years. Some of our successes include renovating several older schools and lowering class size in early grades, reducing the number of houses that can be built annually countywide by 40 percent, keeping experienced police officers and firefighters in Howard County and securing funding to help revitalize the Route 1 corridor. I'm dedicated to more progress on these issues and look forward to continuing to serve you."

What would you like the voters to know about you?

"My wife, Pam, and I are raising our three children, actively working in the PTA, helping with community cleanups and participating with local youth sports."

Diane Wilson (R)

Age: 52

Residence: Owen Brown.

Education: None given.

Occupation: Building operations, lease and asset manager, University of Maryland Medical System.

Elected offices/civic activities: Howard County volunteer coordinator, Bush-Cheney 2000; Howard County volunteer coordinator, Sauerbrey-Schrader 1998; Howard County Most Outstanding Republican of the Year, 2001; past president, Howard County Republican Women's Club.

Why should the voters elect you?

"I served as legislative assistant to Councilman Dennis Schrader, where I managed the daily operations of District 3. I resolved hundreds of constituent problems. I will bring a no-nonsense approach to the office, focusing on public service, not politics. My No. 1 priority is education. We need smaller classes and must ensure that all schools have updated books and equal access to technology. I will also focus on quality-of-life issues: protecting the environment and promoting green space for recreation, safe communities, revitalization of existing neighborhoods and the Route 1 corridor. We need more road construction funds to minimize traffic congestion."

What would you like the voters to know about you?

"Twenty-eight years ago, the first women were elected to the County Council. Without my election, we face the possibility of an all-male council."
