County Unemployment Dips
Howard County's unemployment rate fell to 2.8 percent in September, from 3 percent in August, the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation reported this month. That was down from 3 percent in September 2001.
The overall state unemployment rate dropped to 3.9 percent in September, from 4.2 percent in August. The national jobless rate was 5.4 percent in September, down from 5.7 percent in August.
Tourism Council Fundraiser
The Howard County Tourism Council will hold "An American Holiday" from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Ten Oaks Ballroom, 5000 Signal Bell Lane, Clarksville.
The event includes live entertainment, a silent auction and food from area restaurants. Proceeds will benefit the development of the council's Web site and educational programs.

Expo for Entrepreneurial Moms
Bizymoms of Columbia, a support group for mothers who operate or seek to start home-based businesses, will sponsor a Moms Expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Thursday at Slayton House, Wilde Lake Village Green, Wilde Lake Village Center, Columbia.
The expo will feature products and services offered by mothers with home-based businesses, along with children's entertainment. Door prizes, free samples, light refreshments and discounts will be offered. For more information, call 301-854-2369.
Business Seminars Offered
The Howard County Economic Development Authority's Business Resource Center and Marketing Partners Inc. will sponsor a seminar, "Marketing Basics: Promote Your Company for Business Growth," from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Registration is $45.
The resource center and AJE Consulting will sponsor a seminar, "Navigating the Certification Maze," from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday. The cost is $50.

TSI TelSys Stock Sale
TSI TelSys Corp., a Columbia maker of satellite equipment, has planned a private sale of up to 5 million common shares at nearly 13 cents each to help fund product development.
The sale is expected to close by Dec. 20. TSI TelSys stock is listed on Canada's TSX Venture Exchange.
Silicon Valley Breakfast
The BWI Business Partnership Inc. will hold a breakfast meeting at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday at the Sheraton International Hotel/BWI Airport, 7032 Elm Rd., Baltimore.

Grayson Homes Honored
Grayson Homes, an Ellicott City builder, received the 2003 Mention Award for Commitment to Quality from the National Association of Home Builders Research Center.
The award judges conducted a site evaluation of Grayson and interviewed its employees, the company said.
