Record: 6-2, 4-1 in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. Earned the second seed, and defeated Carroll, 41-14, on Saturday in the first round of the WCAC tournament.
The road ahead: DeMatha will host third-seeded Good Counsel (5-3) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the semifinals at Parkdale. The winner will play the Gonzaga-St. John's winner in the championship game on Nov. 22 at Montgomery Blair High.
Playoff appearances: 1991-2002.
Postseason history: The Stags, with a postseason record of 18-3, are the lone WCAC team to qualify for the tournament every year. They have won eight championships (1991-95, 1998 and 2000-01).
You probably did not know: The Stags have lost two games in a season for the first time since 1996, when they finished 8-2, the first and only time the Stags failed to reach the conference final since the league began holding a postseason tournament in 1991.
What the Stags must do to win it all: "We have to play mistake-free football. We have to execute and make big plays. . . . Our offense has played well, and our defense is getting better, but our next two games will be our toughest this season." -- DeMatha Coach Bill McGregor.
0 Times DeMatha has lost twice to the same team in one season since the conference began holding a tournament in 1991. DeMatha lost to Gonzaga, 18-7, on Sept. 28, and would play Gonzaga in the WCAC title game if both teams win on Saturday. In 1994, DeMatha lost to Gonzaga in the regular season, 19-7, only to defeat the Eagles in the conference semifinals, 28-14.
