'Miss Ethel Remembers'
Trace the history of Shady Side from the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries through the life of one of its oldest citizens, Flora Ethel Nowell Andrews, in the autobiography "Miss Ethel Remembers . . . ."
The book was originally published on Andrews' 103rd birthday, in November 1991. In the book, Andrews, who was born in Shady Side in 1888, tells of her experiences as principal of Shady Side Elementary School and owner of the Andrews Hotel, which was opened by her parents as a rural boardinghouse.
Andrews died in 1996 at the age of 108. Her book was re-released this month to commemorate her 114th birthday and is available for purchase at Captain Salem Avery House Museum, at 1418 E.W. Shady Side Rd. For more information, call the museum at 410-867-4486.
