Book Giveaway at Eastport
Eastport Elementary School will hold a Reading Is Fundamental book giveaway from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 20 in the school's media center. The giveaway will be held in conjunction with the school's "Read Down Day," a program that encourages children to read out loud to younger kids. During the event fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders will read books to children in kindergarten through third grade.

Calling All Artists
Anne Arundel Community College is looking for artists for its exhibit "Mute," which will be on display in the College's Cade Center for Fine Arts Gallery from March 5 through April 4. Interested artists can submit as many as six slides of samples of their work.
Each slide should be labeled with the artist's name, the title of the work, the medium, and the work's dimensions and year of completion. Slides should be encased in a plastic sheet, and each entry should be accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope and a $15 entry fee. Slides should be postmarked no later than Jan. 27.

Library's Holiday Plans
All 15 branches of the Anne Arundel County Public Library system and Library Headquarters will be closed Dec. 22, 24, 25 and 29 and Jan. 1, in observance of the Christmas and New Year's holidays.
Branches will close at 5 p.m. Dec. 31, New Year's Eve.
Planning for Bad Weather
The Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works announced that it is ready to handle severe weather in the event of a snowstorm.
The department encourages the public to call its County Emergency Operations Center for assistance with food, shelter, power or medical care in case of a storm, at 410-222-8040.
The Department of Public Works also asks residents to park vehicles in their driveways; keep children away from plows and other heavy equipment; and remove trash cans and recycling bins from the street during storms with four or more inches of snow.
Blood Pressure Screenings
North Arundel Hospital's storefront at Arundel Mills is offering free blood pressure screenings Tuesday and Dec. 17, 19 and 23.

Gingerbread House Class
Annapolis Whole Foods Market is holding a gingerbread house class at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Whole Foods bakery team leader Chad Woodmancy and team member Joy Tester will guide the class through the proper steps for building and decorating a gingerbread house. The class includes a $10 registration fee for materials.
