* Coach: Doug Poppe (fourth year, 35-33).

* Last season: 15-9, 11-1 (lost to Riverheads, 55-52, in Region B quarterfinals).

* Returning starters/letter winners: 4/7.

* Outlook: Brentsville has lost three regular season Bull Run games in the past two years, but has no tournament title to show for it. That could change this winter when the Tigers again put a veteran, disciplined, stingy (37.9 ppg allowed last season vs. league foes) team on the court, with reigning champion Clarke County the likely nemesis.

"If the cards play out right, there's no reason why we can't do what we did last year," said Poppe, whose team rattled off 12 consecutive wins against district teams after an early January loss to Clarke.

Point guard Brian Owen and forward Jacob Lavely were both second-team all-district choices and will join forces with senior forward Louis Spriggs to lead the senior-laden squad. Centreville transfer Ricky Harper adds back-court depth.

Six of Brentsville's nine losses last season were to AA or AAA schools. The Tigers also lost to Riverheads in the Region B quarterfinals after being up by 14 at the half, one in a troublesome series of third-quarter letdowns.

Brentsville, which next season will play in the AA Northwestern District, again will host the Dudley Martin Chevrolet Holiday Classic, featuring Marshall, Hedgesville (W.Va.), James Wood, Emmanuel Christian, North Stafford, George Mason and Highland.
