Coach: Robert Lloyd, first season.

Last season's record: 8-16.

Conference: Independent (second year of two-year trial period in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference).

Returning starters: None.

Outlook: The Knights will play every team in the WCAC -- arguably the strongest conference in the area. They will confront that schedule with a first-year coach and five new starters, none of whom are seniors. Only one player -- senior guard Willie Martinez -- has any experience at the varsity level.

But Lloyd -- a former varsity assistant in West Virginia and Ohio -- and his players are heartened by last year's successful junior varsity campaign. Under Lloyd's direction, that team finished 7-9 against WCAC competition. Sophomore shooting guard Glen West led the junior varsity in scoring, and will be the Knights' main offensive weapon. Junior point guard Kris Thompson will run the offense, and junior Robert Gregory will be the primary inside threat.

Coach's comment: "We're very competitive, but we're young. We're small, but we're quick. Quickness can beat strength, and as long as we can hit the first punch, we'll be fine. In years past, basketball wasn't a high choice [for athletes] here. I'm trying to bring a different attitude to the basketball program."
