* Coach: Brion Dunlap (third year, 11-32).

* Last season: 4-17, 0-6 (lost to Woodbridge, 50-40, in Cardinal District semifinals).

* Returning starters/letter winners: 2/6.

* Outlook: There are easier places to build a boys' basketball program than in the Cardinal District, where Woodbridge has won 18 games or more for the past dozen years, Gar-Field has posted just one losing mark in 13 seasons and Hylton is hot off its best showing in school history.

In its two-year existence, Forest Park has beaten none of those teams, and it dropped 15 of its last 16 in 2001-02, although the Bruins gave Hylton and Woodbridge trouble late in the season.

Point guard Kenny Carter emerged as a gem, leading the team in scoring, three-pointers (16) and free-throw percentage (76.1). This season he will play some at the off-guard to avoid some of the pounding he received last year. No other returning Bruin averaged as many as four points a game, though Dunlap believes this team is quicker and more athletic than previous versions. Forest Park shot 57.9 percent from the line last season and failed to reach 50 points in 10 outings.

Gerel Nesbitt and Marcus Relf, two players who helped lead the Bruins to a Metro South championship appearance last summer, are no longer in the program.
