Decoration Contest

Leesburg's 12th annual holiday decoration contest, sponsored by the town's economic development commission and downtown committee, begins this week.

Certificates will be awarded in these "best" categories: business overall, business window, business door, creative business, residential overall, creative residence, residential door and traditional residence.

Any business or residence in Leesburg is eligible, and nominations are due Wednesday. Judging by town residents, known as the "Prize Patrol," will be held Thursday through Dec. 23.

Parade Winners

More than 60 groups and individuals participated in the 2002 Holidays in Leesburg Parade on Dec. 7.

Winners were declared in five categories: best band, Heritage High School marching band; best float, Celtic Rhythm School of Dance; best holiday theme, Cornerstone Chapel; best vehicle, Blue & Gray Military Vehicles; best holiday all-around, Ida Lee Theater Inspirations "Reindeer Auditions."

Disability Board

The Loudoun County Disability Services Board will meet Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Suite 103 of the Shenandoah Building, 102 Heritage Way NE, Leesburg.

The board represents disabled people in Loudoun County and works to include them in mainstream community life.

Walking Club

The Loudoun Walking and Volkssport Club will hold its third annual open house Thursday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Rust Library, 380 Old Waterford Rd., Leesburg.

The public is invited to meet fellow walkers, learn about benefits of walking, places to walk in the county, the club's walking program and plans for 2003. Refreshments will be served.

The nonprofit club sponsors walks throughout the year, eight sanctioned by the International Federation of Popular Sports, a nonprofit organization devoted to noncompetitive self-paced walking.
