Runner of the Year
J.J. Wetzel, Spalding, Sr.
Wetzel's second-place finish at the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship capped a season in which he placed no lower than third in six major meets. He was the top county finisher at the Knights' Invite, placing third overall in 16 minutes 5 seconds. Wetzel's titles included victories in the small-schools division at Bull Run in 16:47, the large-schools race at the Doc Jones Anne Arundel County Invitational (16:31), the Meade Autumn Classic (18:13.15) and the St. John's-Prospect Hall Invitational (16:36).
Coach of the Year
Ed Purpura, Severna Park: Without a superstar, Purpura coached the Falcons to their fourth county championship in five years, as they finished seven points ahead of Broadneck. The team's pack running, with only about 30 seconds between the first and fifth runners, was critical to its success. Purpura also led the boys to a first-place finish at the Howard County Invitational.
Will Eden, Annapolis, Soph.: Although his season was cut short by a bruised tailbone, Eden made his mark as county champion in 17:58.9. He was fourth or higher in four major meets, including a fourth-place finish at the Knights' Invite.
Jonathan Julian, Annapolis, Jr.: The Panthers' No. 2 runner finished sixth at the county championships, fifth in the region and ninth at states. He ended the season at the Foot Locker Northeast Region meet, placing 23rd in the junior race in 17:20.
Klayton Lipman, Northeast, Jr.: After finishing 21st at the county championships a year ago, Lipman improved to a fourth-place finish this fall in 18:17 and emerged as the Eagles' No. 2 runner. He was fourth at the 3A East Region meet.
Zach Ludington, Severna Park, Sr.: An eighth-place finish at the county championship meet propelled the Falcons to their fourth title. He was 11th at the 3A East Region meet in 18:01.11 and was team's No. 2 runner at Bull Run.
Chris Magette, Severna Park, Sr.: Magette was seventh at the county championship meet in 18:42.9 and seventh at the 3A East Region championships. He placed 11th at the state meet and sixth at the Doc Jones Classic.
Alek Pivec, St. Mary's, Sr.: Pivec defended last year's MIAA B Conference title in 17:23 at Oregon Ridge Park and was named to the all-MIAA B Conference team. He was fifth overall in the MIAA and placed ninth at the Knights' Invite. He was 21st in the Foot Locker senior race in 17:25.
Steve Plummer, South River, Sr.: Second only to Eden during the regular season, Plummer was runner-up at the county championships in 18:13. He had three more top 10 efforts, including third at the Meade Autumn Classic.
Ryan Williams, Northeast, Sr.: The Eagles' top runner placed second at the Howard County Striders Invitational, third at the county and regional championships and fifth at the Meade Autumn Classic. He also placed sixth in the medium-schools division at Bull Run and in the small-schools division at the Doc Jones Anne Arundel County Invitational.
Joe Wojciechowski, North County, Jr.: He finished fifth at the county championships in 18:24.5 and sixth at the regional meet. He also placed fourth at the Meade Autumn Classic and was the Knights' top runner.
