On Dec. 16, the Sheriff's Office requested help catching a potbellied pig. An animal control officer could not catch the pig but located its owner. During the investigation, she noticed that the owner had a dog on his property without adequate shelter so she told him about laws pertaining to that. A few days later, the officer determined that adequate shelter had been provided.
On Dec. 16, a resident reported being bitten by an opossum he tried to pick up in a neighbor's back yard. The neighbor shot the possum. A animal control officer took it to the shelter for rabies tests, which were negative.
On Dec. 21, an animal control officer responding to a report of an animal in distress found a dog covered with tire marks and mud. The officer contacted its owners, who had filed a lost animal report. The owners took the dog to the animal emergency hospital.
The animal shelter will be closed Wednesday for New Year's Day. Regular operations resume Thursday at 8 a.m. During the closing, animal control officers will be on duty for designated emergencies only. If you have one, contact the Sheriff's Office at 703-777-0445.
