District Court Appoints

New Administrative Judge

Thurman H. Rhodes has been appointed administrative judge for the District Court in Prince George's County (District 5) effective Jan. 1. He replaces Judge Frank Kravotil, who is retiring.

The appointment was made by James N. Vaughan, chief judge of the District Court, with the concurrence of Court of Appeals Chief Judge Robert M. Bell.

Rhodes, a graduate of Morgan State College and Catholic University School of Law has been on the bench since May 1988. He has served on the Maryland Judicial Conference's Child Support Enforcement Committee from 1994 to 1997, Civil Law and Procedure Committee from 1997 to the present, and is currently chairman; and on the Mental Health, Alcoholism and Addiction Committee.

The District Court of Maryland serves all jurisdictions in the state. It hears landlord-tenant cases, motor vehicle cases, misdemeanors and some felony charges.

Umpires Group Offers

Winter Training Sessions

The Metropolitan Baseball Umpires Association will begin training new and returning umpires at 7 p.m. Jan. 15, and every Wednesday through March 6, at High Point High School in Beltsville. The association officiates a variety of levels of baseball including high school, adult and youth games throughout the Washington area.

The classes include instruction on high school rules and field mechanics, as well as a practical training session with experienced umpires, before the start of the season. There is a $20 registration fee that's refunded to participants after they complete the class.

Golf Course Company Honors

Manager of Patuxent Greens

Aaron Czajka has been named General Manager of the Year by Meadowbrook Golf, the management and maintenance company for Patuxent Greens' golf properties in Laurel.

The award was presented to Czajka by Ron E. Jackson, president and chief executive of Meadowbrook Golf, and Jerry Pate, former U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open champion, during an awards dinner at the company's 2002 General Managers Conference Dec. 7-10 in Orlando. Honoring Czajka's overall achievements in operation, marketing and leadership.
