Guilty plea: A taxi driver has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the Nov. 4 death of a 90-year-old woman who was run down after riding in his cab.
Louis L. Callands, 64, of the 1800 block of U Street SE, entered his plea Tuesday in D.C. Superior Court.
He faces up to 40 years in prison when he is sentenced March 6.
Prosecutors said Callands drove Maretha Brown and her daughter home to the 1800 block of 24th Place NE. After dropping them off, Callands, believing that he had been shortchanged, drove his cab over Brown, prosecutors said.
Police later learned, from field tests, that Callands was drunk at the time.
Boy wounded: A Temple Hills man managed to thwart an armed robbery and escape without injury last night, but the robber's shot into the air hit an 8-year-old boy as he slept in his bedroom, police said.
The shotgun fire came as the intended victim ran away, police said. A pellet shattered a window in the 2200 block of Afton Street in the Temple Hills area about 8:45 p.m. and hit the leg of a boy who lives on that street, said Cpl. Tammy Sparkman, a Prince George's County police spokeswoman. The boy was in Children's Hospital last night in good condition, Sparkman said.
