Apartment fires set: Three small fires have been set in two days in a high-rise apartment complex with many elderly residents in the 400 block of H Street NW, a fire department spokesman said yesterday.

The first fire at the Judiciary House apartments was set Wednesday in the basement, spokesman Alan Etter said. Another was set in a stairwell about 9:30 a.m. yesterday, and another about 1:30 p.m. in an apartment that was being renovated. All were quickly extinguished, but Etter said that the number of elderly residents in the building increased the potential for injuries in a large fire.

Etter said anyone with information about the fires should call the arson tip line at 202-673-ARSON.

Wounded boy released: A Prince George's County boy who was hit in a leg by a stray shotgun pellet late Thursday as he slept in his bedroom was released yesterday from Children's Hospital, authorities said.

The 8-year-old was struck after a pellet fired by a would-be robber shattered a window in the 2200 block of Afton Street in the Temple Hills area about 8:45 p.m. Police said the intended victim was a man who managed to thwart the assailant, who fired his shotgun once.

Authorities said they have been unable to identify a suspect in the shooting and asked anyone with information to call the department's Crime Solvers at 301-735-1111.
