Assault suspect sought: Prince George's County police were searching last night for a man suspected in a series of armed robberies and sexual assaults in the Hyattsville area over the past seven weeks.
Cpl. Diane Richardson, a police spokeswoman, described the man as Hispanic, of medium height and weight, with silver caps on his two front teeth and pockmarks on his cheeks. Detectives were meeting yesterday with the victims to create a sketch of the suspect.
Richardson said the first of six reported incidents occurred Nov. 25. Sexual assaults were reported in the first two cases. Most recently, Richardson said, two women called police within an hour yesterday and said a man, matching the suspect's description, knocked on their doors and, with a knife in hand, forced his way into their apartments. Anyone with information about the suspect is urged to call the department's sexual assault unit at 301-772-4908.
Suspects fire at police: Authorities in Prince George's County were searching last night for two men who they said were part of a trio that robbed a Temple Hills International House of Pancakes early yesterday and opened fire on responding officers before fleeing.
Richardson said one of the three men was apprehended shortly after the 12:45 a.m. robbery in the 4400 block of St. Barnabas Road. Authorities did not release his name or other information last night.
Richardson said police, after arriving at the eatery, had a gun battle with the suspects, who she said fired first at the officers. No officers were injured, and it was unclear whether any suspects were struck by bullets.
Worker finds body in car: Prince George's County police are investigating the county's first homicide of 2003, after a man was found slumped inside a vehicle in the parking lot of a Riverdale apartment complex.
Richardson said the man, whose identity was not known, was discovered by a maintenance worker shortly before noon yesterday in the 6800 block of Riverdale Road. He had been shot several times and had been dead for at least a day, she said. Compiled from reports by staff writers.
