Child neglect charges: A Manassas couple have been charged with child neglect and reckless endangerment after school officials discovered that two of their children had severe frostbite and were sleeping on a bare floor, police said yesterday.

Leon P. Crawford, 35, and Kimberly K. Crawford, 30, were arrested Tuesday and are being held on $10,000 bond each in the Prince William County jail. They were charged with two counts each of felony child neglect involving a 12-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy who had frostbite on their feet. They also were charged with two counts each of reckless endangerment, involving an 8-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl.

School officials noticed the two older children limping Dec. 9, and they were hospitalized for treatment. Police said the boy is still hospitalized; the girl was released to foster care.

Woman stabbed to death: A woman was found stabbed to death in her Aspen Hill apartment Tuesday night after a relative called to ask the landlord and police to check on her, Montgomery County police said.

It was unclear how long Anita Sofyan, 44, had been dead when her body was found at 7:30 p.m., said police spokeswoman Lucille Baur. There was no sign of forced entry into the apartment in the 3800 block of Bel Pre Road, Baur said.

Baur said that Sofyan had at least one roommate. Her death is the county's first homicide this year, police said.

Teacher charged with sexual assault: Howard County police have arrested a Baltimore County high school teacher and charged him with engaging in a videotaped sex act with a 13-year-old girl he met through an Internet chat room.

Police said Charles Levi Maxwell, 33, of Timonium, Md., a teacher at Dundalk High School, picked up the girl near her home New Year's Day and drove her to a church parking lot, where police say he engaged in a sex act with her that was taped by a video camera mounted on the car's dashboard.

After the girl and her parents reported the incident to authorities, detectives helped arrange another meeting via the Internet, police said. Maxwell showed up Tuesday, police said, and was arrested.

Murder indictments: Two Anne Arundel County men have been indicted in the slaying of a 17-year-old missing since 1996, police said yesterday.

Christopher Bolen, 23, of the 2200 block of Dairy Farm Road in Gambrills, and Stefan Bell, 25, of the 2800 block of North Gate Drive in Waldorf, were charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery. Joseph Demarest, a high school student in Gambrills, disappeared Sept. 4, 1996. Police said Bolen and Bell were "close associates" of Demarest. The two were being held without bail.

Police recovered human remains yesterday morning in connection with the probe, police said.
