CELEBRATING THE DREAMS OF KING
Children 8 to 14 will learn about the grass roots leadership and accomplishments of late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., talk about the importance of having and pursuing dreams and create an artistic tribute to their own dreams during "Martin Luther King Stories and Activities," sponsored by Annapolis's Borders Books & Music. Kids will hear excerpts from Doreen Rappaport's book "Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.," participate in discussion groups (based on age) and talk about how King's accomplishments have shaped their lives. The MLK celebration will end with an arts and crafts session for kids to make "cloud mobiles" from which they can hang their own dreams. 11 a.m. Monday. Borders Books & Music, 1115 Annapolis Mall, Annapolis. Free. 410-571-0923.
St. John's College tutor Margaret Kirby discusses the work of 19th-century German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Kirby will focus on the Goethe poem "At Midnight Hour" and discuss ideas of temporality (the poet's use of and philosophy surrounding concepts of time) found in both his scientific and literary works. According to Kirby, the German writer believed that past, present and future events happened simultaneously instead of linearly. Audience members will receive copies of Goethe's work in both German and English. Kirby, who has taught at the school's Santa Fe and Annapolis campuses, has been a St. John's College tutor for 13 years. 8:15 p.m. tomorrow. Francis Scott Key Auditorium, St. John's College, 60 College Ave., Annapolis. Free. 410-626-2539.
