Man charged in shootout: A Landover Hills man was arrested at his house yesterday and charged in a Jan. 7 police shootout outside a Prince George's County pancake house, authorities said.

Kelvin D. Chapman, 32, of the 4000 block of 75th Avenue, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and armed robbery. He was denied bond by a county commissioner and remained in the county jail last night.

Authorities said Chapman was among three men who shot at officers after robbing the International House of Pancakes in the 4100 block of St. Barnabas Road about 12:30 a.m. Everett W. Keeton Jr., 25, was arrested that morning and faces the same charges as Chapman. Police said a third man is still at large.

Well-dressed thief: A well-dressed woman has been pretending to be a stranded motorist in a scheme to get money from sympathetic passersby near Metro stations, Montgomery County police said.

Police said they are searching for Kim B. Peoples, 42, who has been charged in arrest warrants in more than 40 cases of theft by deception in the Washington region. Investigators said that since September, Peoples has approached people and told them that she has locked the keys to her BMW in her trunk. She says that she is a lawyer in the District and then asks for cab fare so she can get her extra keys, police said.

Peoples is described as a black woman, about 5 feet 4 inches tall and 96 pounds. Police ask that anyone with information call 301-565-5835.

* Man shot to death: Davon L. Lewis, 28, was fatally shot early yesterday morning outside a Seat Pleasant restaurant in the 5200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Highway, authorities said. Prince George's County police said they did not have a suspect and knew of no motive in the 3:30 a.m. shooting.

Arrest on White House grounds: A man was arrested yesterday just inside the White House grounds after he apparently tried to slip past the Northwest Gate with a group of journalists, the U.S. Secret Service said yesterday.

Spokesman Marc Connolly said the man was apprehended by uniformed Secret Service officers just before noon. The man, whose name was not released, is due to appear in D.C. Superior Court today. Authorities provided no further details yesterday.

Murder charge: A Southeast Washington man has been charged with murder in the Jan. 9 shooting of a 17-year-old, police said. Devaughn Wright, 19, of the 1300 block of Barnaby Terrace SE, killed Leon A. Brown during a fight in the 100 block of Atlantic Street SE, according to charging documents.
