YMCA's Teen Poetry Slam
The YMCA of Prince George's County is sponsoring a Poetry Slam for teenagers from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the YMCA, 3501 Moylan Dr., Bowie. The event is part of the Teen Time at the YMCA program, a statewide initiative to provide positive and safe recreational experiences for teenagers on weekends.
This event will offer middle and high school students the opportunity to share their original poetry in a safe environment. The event will feature prizes, refreshments and trained staff members to greet, interact with and supervise the youth.
Celebration of the Arts Art students from the Cora L. Rice/G. James Gholson Art Program will host a Black History Month celebration at the G. James Gholson Middle School, 900 Nalley Rd., Landover, at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The program, "The Second Life of the Harlem Renaissance," will honor the accomplishments of African Americans renowned for their achievements in civil rights, sports, music, art and entertainment during the Harlem Renaissance period.
Following the presentation, participants will proceed to the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex, 8001 Sheriff Rd., Landover, to view the students' art exhibition.

Preschool Open House
College Park Nursery School and Kindergarten, on the lower level of St. Andrew's Church, 4512 College Ave., College Park, will hold its annual open house and winter carnival from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday..
Parents will meet the teachers and see the classrooms. There will be games, face painting, a raffle and a baked goods and clothing sale. Applications for the fall will be available. Call Kristi Bahrenburg at 301-277-8268.
Region Director Honored
Marcus Newsome, director of Prince George's County Public Schools Region 3, recently received the Prince George's County Human Relations Commission's Community Service Award. The award was presented at the Prince George's County Human Relations Commission's 21st annual awards last month.
