$1,000 to Sheriff's Office

Employees of Wal-Mart's Leesburg store gave $1,000 to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office as part of their annual donation to community organizations. "It is important to support local organizations that benefit the community where we live and work," said assistant manager Steven Rewis.

This is the first donation that the Sheriff's Office has received from an area retailer. Authorities there said the money would help to support families of slain officers and reward funds.

Excellence in Procurement

The Loudoun County Purchasing Office has won The National Purchasing Institute's Achievement of Excellence in Procurement award for the fourth consecutive year. The Nevada-based association of procurement professionals gives the award to organizations that exhibit professionalism and productivity in purchasing supplies or administering commercial contracts or construction on behalf of county government agencies.

Arts Grants Announced

The Loudoun Arts Council has awarded grants to nine Loudoun arts organizations -- Master Singers of Virginia, Loudoun Academy of the Arts and Loudoun Symphony, each $2,400; Growing Stage, $2,350; Loudoun Ballet, $1,000; Neale Concert Series and Blue Ridge Thunder Cloggers, $500; Loudoun Chorale and Loudoun Community Band, $300.

To receive a grant, local arts organizations must demonstrates artistic quality and sound management practices.
