Two killed: Two men were fatally shot in separate incidents in the District late Saturday and early Sunday, D.C. police said.

About 11:20 p.m. Saturday, police found Kenneth D. Smith, 29, of Mitchellville on the second-floor landing of an apartment building in the 1400 block of Howard Road SE. Smith, who had been shot several times in the body, was pronounced dead within the hour at Prince George's Hospital Center.

At 2:06 a.m., police found Robert Quarles, 19, lying in the road in the 1400 block of S Street SE. Quarles, who lived in the block, had been shot in the face and was pronounced dead about 4:35 a.m. at D.C. General Hospital, police said.

Fatal stabbing: At the height of Sunday night's blizzard, a 42-year-old Alexandria area man was stabbed to death outside his apartment building in the Penn Daw neighborhood, Fairfax County police said yesterday.

Mohammad Kazam, 42, had been dropped off about 9 p.m. outside his apartment building in the 2900 block of Furman Lane, just west of South Kings Highway. A witness told police she heard an argument outside the building, looked outside and saw Kazam lying in the snow and another man running away.

Police said Kazam had been stabbed in the upper body, and he died a short time later at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital. Detectives have no suspect in the killing. The person who ran away was described as a young man, about 5 feet 2 and 130 pounds, wearing a dark jacket with a dark hood. He may be of Middle Eastern descent, because he and Kazam, a Pakistani, argued in a language unfamiliar to the witness. Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to call Fairfax police at 703-691-2131.
