Money Earmarked at Dulles
A spending bill approved by Congress includes $1.6 million for improvements at Dulles International Airport. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority said the money could go toward current projects, such as construction of a new air traffic control tower and tower equipment and possibly new runways.
Virgin Atlantic to London Twice
Virgin Atlantic will add a second daily flight from Dulles to London's Heathrow Airport starting June 21.
United, US Airways Code-Sharing
United and US Airways have expanded their code-sharing program introduced in January. The US Airways code has been placed on United flights from Dulles to Las Vegas; San Diego; Oakland and San Jose, Calif.; Chicago; Portland, Ore.; Phoenix; and Seattle.
National to Florida More Often
US Airways and US Airways Express are adding daily flights between Reagan National Airport and Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville, Fla., beginning April 6. Two new flights to Jacksonville will be operated by the US Airways Express carrier Midway Airlines using 50-seat Canadair regional jets. The other flights will be operated by US Airways using an Airbus to Tampa and Boeing 747s to Orlando.
Midway's Seasonal S.C. Flights
Midway is also adding a Saturday flight during golf season between National and Myrtle Beach, S.C. The flight will run from March 15 through summer and possibly into October and will use Canadair jets.
New Flights From BWI to Milwaukee
Midwest Express Airlines has expanded its schedule to include three daily nonstops Monday through Friday from Baltimore-Washington International Airport to Milwaukee. The airline already operates two daily nonstop flights to Milwaukee on Saturday and Sunday. Midwest Express, which caters to business-class passengers, uses a 32-seat aircraft.
United Kiosks at BWI Counters
United Airlines has installed 10 check-in kiosks near its BWI ticket counters. Domestic passengers at American Airlines, America West, Continental, Delta, Northwest, Southwest and US Airways can also check in and obtain boarding passes through similar kiosks. United's kiosks will also allow passengers to stand by for flights, select seats and request upgrades. Two of the machines will let travelers check baggage and have an attendant available for assistance. To use the kiosk, a major credit card is needed for name identification only.
Two Stores Opening at BWI
Two more stores are opening in BWI's main terminal. Elements, a children's store featuring science and nature-based games, toys and clothing, is to open this month between Piers B and C near Burger King. Gate 12, an accessories shop offering such products as watches and umbrellas, will open soon across from Starbucks at Pier D.
