Southern is back for the first time since a semifinal loss in 2000 and will be vying for its first championship since 1996. Getting to the tournament is nothing new to Fort Hill, which is making its third trip in four years. But the Sentinels' last championship came in 1958. J.M. Bennett, which defeated defending state champion Wicomico in the 2A East Region final, is making its third appearance but its first since 1985.

Holmes has helped produce a similar turnaround at Southern, averaging 18 points during the Bulldogs' run through the North Region. The Bulldogs were 10-8 at the end of the regular season.
