Semifinals: Gwynn Park (23-1 ) vs. Urbana (21-4), 7 p.m. today; Patuxent (20-5) vs. Milford Mill (21-3), 9 p.m. today. Final: 8 p.m. Saturday.

* TOURNAMENT HISTORY

Defending champion Gwynn Park is looking to become the third team to win consecutive 3A titles in the tournament's 31-year history. Urbana is back for the fourth time in the past five years and is looking to win its first state title after losing in the 1999 and 2001 finals. Patuxent prevented a return of the entire field from a year ago with its victory over Westlake in the 3A South Region final. Milford Mill is experienced in state tournament play, having reached the 3A final each of the past five seasons. However, the Millers have lost all five times.

* KEY MATCHUP

Gwynn Park PG Kristen Boone vs. Urbana PG Katie Armentrout: Gwynn Park Coach Marvin Vann makes a case that Boone (six steals per game) is the area's best one-on-one defender, and she will be counted on to stop Armentrout (14.2 points). One of three players in Urbana history to amass 1,000 points in her career, Armentrout has guided the Hawks to a record of 62-18 in four years. She scored 16 points against Gwynn Park in last year's state semifinal, but the Yellow Jackets won, 62-44.
