Library Declares

Amnesty on Fines

Too embarrassed to return that library book due ages ago? Now's your chance.

Alexandria Library patrons will not have to pay fines on overdue items returned between 9 a.m. April 5 and 9 a.m. April 12.

Items can be dropped off at checkout desks or at the anonymous drop boxes. Amnesty is for overdue fines only. Damaged or lost items must be paid in full. Amnesty is not for items from other library systems or for interlibrary loan items.

The amnesty is part of the library's ongoing effort to reclaim items marked "unavailable" in the library system catalog.

Grant Benefits

Yorktown Award

Alumni & Friends of Yorktown High School Inc. has received an anonymous challenge grant to award a scholarship in memory of astronaut David M. Brown, who died in the space shuttle Columbia accident.

Last month, the alumni association started a scholarship to honor Brown, a 1974 graduate of the Arlington high school who carried a Yorktown flag with him on the shuttle.

The scholarship fund has received more than $2,500, including more than $1,000 from the Yorktown class of 1971, which raisedfunds at its last reunion.

The alumni association also received an anonymous donation for a two-for-one challenge grant. With the grant, the group anticipates being able to award a $4,000 merit scholarship in Brown's memory at graduation in June.

At the end of the month, members of the Yorktown science department will submit names of five seniors to a panel of retired Yorktown faculty members, who will review and make a recommendation for the award to the alumni association board of directors.

To make a tax-deductible contribution to the fund, send a check payable to Alumni & Friends of Yorktown High School Inc., to Box 7698, Arlington, Va., 22207. Write "Brown Scholarship" and your affiliation with Yorktown, if any, in the note line.

Employees of firms with corporate matching programs are encouraged to contact the Yorktown alumni organization for details on how to leverage their gift.
