The Sharks travel basketball team hadn't lost a game since Christmas when it headed to Philadelphia last weekend to face some of the stiffest competition of the season. Coached by Jerry Foley and led by 6-foot center Steve Brinkley and 5-10 power forward Nick Rivers, the team took first place in its age bracket in the Friday night Pikesville league and the Sunday afternoon Loch Raven league. In Philadelphia, the Sharks won five straight games, including 32-30 over Liberty Road West, to win the midget division of the 30th Annual Bustleton Classic tournament. It was the first time a Howard County team had won a championship at the tournament since 1992. The team drew on strong performances from its entire roster, which includes Willie Macatee, Kevin Hughes, Michael Feroe, Matt Foley, Scott Ahearn, Greg Clark, Cameron Hardesty and Elliott Poehlman.
The Howard Huskies PeeWee A team won the Spring Classic tournament played in Fredericksburg. The Huskies were 4-0, defeating the Fredericksburg Falcons (3-1), the Roanoke Express (9-3), the Fredericksburg Select (3-1) and in the title game, the Falcons (6-2) again. Joe Miller was named MVP. He had a hat trick in the final and six goals overall. Andy McCrumb (5), Colin Scott (5), Ben Avara (2), Collin Morstein, Matt Wolf and Ricky Cantore also scored for the Huskies, who finished their season 39-15-2
The Chiefs Mite B Travel Hockey won the CBHL (Capital Beltway Hockey League) with a 5-2 victory over the Reston Raiders. The Chiefs topped Montgomery, 9-1, to advance to the final. The Chiefs finished league play undefeated and had an overall record of 38-9-3. Earlier in the season, the team won the Eastern Regional Silver Sticks tournament and the York, Pa., Thanksgiving tournament.
The CSC Cyclones finished 3-0 to win the PWSI Icebreaker tournament, defeating the MSC Green Dragons (3-0), the PWSI United (3-1) and the Vienna Storm (4-1). Ryan Mastalerz (3), Brandon Estrain (2), Andrew Foong (2), Alex Driessen, Nick Riso and Billy Harris scored for the Cyclones. Estrain (3), Mastalerz (2), Driessen (2), Derek Heywood and Conor Hasett had assists for the Cyclones. Bryce Boring and Tyler Parker played well defensively, and Konrad Petre was strong in goal.
Columbia United Premier was 2-1 in the U-12 Division of the Maryland Shore Classic in Ocean City. The team lost to the Ocean City Makoes (1-0), defeated the Calvert County Patriots (3-1) and defeated the Montgomery Soccer Club (3-0). Amir Shahegh made three saves, and Connor Cortes had seven saves in goal. Stevie Milak (2), Russell Umstead, Brian Gibbons, Jon Talbot and Taylor Pack scored during the tournament. Shahegh had 11 saves, and Cortes had seven saves.
The CSC Galaxy were 2-1-1 at the recent PWSI tournament in Quantico. The Galaxy defeated Arlington Ambush (2-1) and STM Tigers 90 (1-0) and tied Boston Lightning (0-0). Travis Puls (2) and Jimmy Becker scored, and each had an assist. In the final, against SYC Phoenix, the game ended 1-1, and the Galaxy lost in overtime.

Loyola College Special Olympics Swim Meet
Howard County swimmers won 37 gold, 19 silver and 17 bronze medals in 46 events. The meet drew 127 swimmers from Baltimore County and city, Charles, Carroll, Hartford, Fredrick, Prince George's, Washington and Howard counties. The Howard County team is coached by Becky Lessey and Curtis Baumann.

Mike Waschak, Jane Ahn, Michaela Parks, Molly Peter, Edie Daniello, Rosie Daniello, Joe Scott, David Snyder, Monica Evans, Katie Proia, Samantha Anderson, Chieylienne White, Trushi Patel, Ross Erdman and Brian Vary had outstanding efforts. Newcomers Bryan Novinsky, Miglena Jones and Jennifer and Meagan Helfst had personal bests in their first swim meet.
The Loyola Meet featured Howard's five unified relay teams. These teams are each composed of two Special Olympic athletes and two teenage volunteers. The unified members were Britty Whiteford, Brooks Whiteford, Justin Griffith, Kimberly Baker, Jeannette Braun, Erica Pearson, Lindsay Weigley, Kelley LeFevere, Meaghan Verleysen and team leader Laura Allen.
