Highlights: Brandon Estrain (2), Alex Driessen (2), Ryan Mastalerz (2) and Derek Haywood scored for the Cyclones in their opening game of the NCSL spring season. Driessen (2) and Estrain (2), Haywood, Andrew Foong and Billy Harris each had assists. The Cyclones were led on defense by Bryce Boring and Conor Hassett.

Thunder Red 0

Highlights: Moni Sallam scored on a penalty kick with seconds left in the game in the Diplomats' NCSL opener. Tony Riso and Tom Hart gave a tremendous effort on defense.

U-13 Boys

CSC Galaxy 2

Waldorf Vipers 1

Highlights: Jimmy Becker and Nathan Jordan scored for the Galaxy, and Travis Puls had an assist.

U-14 Girls

Columbia Blue Magic 5

New Wave Predators 0

Highlights: Jenna Baldi (3), Elizabeth Cannon and Heather Woolschlager scored for the Blue Magic in the season opener. Cannon, Jaymie Estrain, Laura Thacher and Kelly Hughes had assists. Allison Boring and Bali Boule controlled the midfield, and Ally Bloom recorded her first shutout of the season.


8U Highlights: UCLA was led by Alison Requa, Bridgette Vogan and Alex CitaraManis, who each recorded two putouts in an age group in which no scores are kept. USC standouts included Shannon Pilgrim, with several nice plays, and Tori Smith and Lauren Lettieri, with a couple of hits each.


Washington Huskies 19

Virginia 14

Highlights: Carolyn Rogers, Arielle Pazornick and Erin Kelly were strong on defense, helping the Huskies' offense overcome a 10-run deficit. Miranda McFerrin had four hits and scored four runs for Virginia. Megan Paugh and Lizzie McCollum played great defense and combined for seven hits.

Georgia Tech 16

Florida State 9

Highlights: Jennifer Lingg and Grace Colgan led Georgia Tech with two RBI each. Grace Colgan had two putouts in the second inning. Third baseman Kelly Scruggs threw a runner out at first. Georgia Tech was led by the fielding of Jena Frick and Shannon Zarek.

Arizona 10

Stanford 9

Highlights: Megan Lucas and Jody Myers played well defensively for Arizona, and Grace Tolley caught a popup behind the plate. For Stanford, Jess Albrecht and Lizzy Jarrett were offensive leaders, and Colleen Connors provided strong defense.


Maryland 14

North Carolina 11

Highlights: Terps' pitchers Sarah Holzman and Caitlyn Tufts combined for seven strikeouts. Hillary Wilk and Jessica McCann led the offense. For North Carolina, Marta Chell, Brittany Meyer, Elise Crawford and Zoe Ledbetter were strong on offense.

Florida State 10

Georgia Tech 9

Highlights: Florida State won in the final inning with a two-run double by Chelsea Corriveau and a game-winning hit by Jocelyn Proch. Katey Smalley and Corriveau pitched well for FSU. Georgia Tech was led by Allison Lekich with three RBI and a double, pitcher Maria Sieron and catcher Mandy Hanlon.

Arizona 11

Stanford 1

Highlights: Arizona pitchers Caitlin Connors and Lauren Kolodrubetz combined for a three-hitter, with six strikeouts and five walks. The offense was led by Emily Battinelli, Katie Konapelsky and Kolodrubetz.

USC 17


Highlights: USC was led by pitchers Julia Benjamin and Ilana Waldman, who each had four strikeouts. Gretchen Heyman and Amanda Hatfield also played well for USC. UCLA was led by pitcher Jessica Tallman and Jacqui McDonald, who was 2 for 2 at the plate.

Maryland Chill

The Maryland Chill 12U team went 4-2 to finish fourth at the NSA Early Bird tournament. Solid hitting and clutch defensive plays by Katie Gustafson led the Chill. Katie had a home run, a triple, five singles and seven RBI. Speedster Elle Marks had six stolen bases, five hits and four RBI. Emily Reider made several crucial defensive plays. The team had outstanding pitching performances by Casey O'Neill (2-1) and Stephanie Speierman (2-0).
