Assistance Office Opens

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington has opened an office in Sterling to provide assistance to immigrants and family and children's services.

Robert Chirles, director of Loudoun County's Department of Social Services, welcomed the new office, saying that because of tremendous growth in the county, "it is difficult to keep up with demands placed on public and private agencies."

Immigrant assistance includes help filing legal forms for work permits, residency, citizenship and other needs. English classes, a job placement hotline in English and Spanish and citizenship classes are also offered.

Family services include counseling for couples, families and individuals experiencing difficulties and stress in their lives or relationships, including learning disorders, marital discord, substance abuse or depression.

Children's services include foster care and adoption services and counseling and support for women experiencing crisis pregnancies.

Some services are free, but most are provided for a fee, often based on a sliding scale. The office is at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church, 46833 Harry Byrd Hwy., Sterling. Appointments may be made by calling 703-421-2317.

VSS Backs York Campaign

Voters to Stop Sprawl has endorsed Scott K. York (R-At Large) for reelection as chairman of the Loudoun Board of Supervisors, as it did in 1999.

"York promised that he would take steps to control growth, and he did as he promised," said VSS spokesman Joe Maio. "It was a unanimous decision."
