A 20-year-old Midland man, a recent graduate of Liberty High School, was killed in his home last week when he surprised burglars who shot him several times and set the house on fire, according to the Fauquier County Sheriff's Department.

Brian Michael Mace entered his home in the 12000 block of Elk Run Road sometime during the day April 9 and interrupted an unknown number of burglars stealing firearms from the house, said Lt. Louis Dominguez, a spokesman for the Sheriff's Department.

Mace shared the house with his parents and aunt, all of whom were at work at the time of the incident, Dominguez said. A neighbor called 911 about 1:30 p.m. after noticing the fire.

No one had been charged, and sheriff's deputies were investigating, he said.

The slaying is the county's second this year. On March 7, Larry Andrews died after being beaten with a rolling pin and stabbed with a kitchen knife in his Warrenton home. Christopher George Steele was arrested the next day and charged with capital murder.

Town police said Steele also beat Andrews's wife, Margaret Ann Masi, and stole an unknown amount of the prescription painkiller OxyContin from the house.
