7 Arrested in Robberies

Montgomery County police have arrested seven Silver Spring residents, including two adults and five juveniles, in a series of armed robberies in the Wheaton area, police said last week.

The string of violent robberies began Feb. 22 and targeted people walking alone near bus stops at night, police said. Many of the victims required hospital treatment after the incidents. The last of seven incidents detailed by police occurred March 19.

On March 7, a man who was jumped near Amherst Avenue and Reedie Drive suffered a broken nose. Nothing was taken. On March 13, a man who was beaten and pistol-whipped near Longmeade Crossing also had his laptop computer stolen. Another victim, who was beaten up at Hardy Road by a gang of men, suffered broken ribs, though nothing was taken.

Police in the 4th District were able to track down the suspects from a license plate number seen by a victim during a robbery on March 19, police said last week.

Kamari Williams, 18, of the 13100 block of Tamarack Road, and Julio Cesar Ciacado, 18, of the 11600 block of Lockwood Drive, were booked on four armed robbery counts and four charges of conspiracy to commit armed robbery each, police said. Williams was released on $75,000 bond; Ciacado was released on personal bond.

Steven Dickerson, 16, of the 8200 block of Nolte Avenue, and William Beatty, 16, of the 1700 block of Loft Way, were charged as adults with four counts of armed robbery each. Dickerson also was charged as a juvenile with three counts of strong-arm robbery, and Beatty was charged as a juvenile with one strong-arm robbery count. Each was released on his personal bond.

Two 16-year-olds and a 17-year-old were charged as juveniles with two counts of strong-arm robbery each. They were released to the custody of parents or guardians.

Police said the handgun used in the robberies turned out to be a silver BB gun with a black handle.

Pedestrian Hit by Truck Dies

A 66-year-old Takoma Park man died last week after he stepped into the path of a pickup truck on Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring, Montgomery County police said.

Augustin Diaz Vasquez, of the 8700 block of Barron Street, died at Washington Adventist Hospital from injuries he received after being hit by a northbound Toyota Tundra pickup about 30 feet north of the intersection of Barron Street and Piney Branch Road on April 9, police said.

The driver of the pickup was identified as Miguel Angel Molina, 51, of the 1000 block of Quebec Terrace in Silver Spring.

The police investigation is continuing. No charges have been filed.
