Osbourn Park 2, Potomac 1

Nicholas Leigh's header with less than six minutes remaining lifted Osbourn Park to a 2-1 home victory over visiting Potomac on Tuesday night, giving the Yellow Jackets the Cedar Run District regular season title and an automatic berth in the Northwestern Region tournament.

Senior Andrew Dykstra, Osbourn Park's former goalkeeper now playing offense, used a header of his own to assist Leigh's goal, which gave Osbourn Park (11-1-3, 5-1-0 Cedar Run) a season sweep of Potomac (10-3-2, 3-3-0) .

"It was all off of [Andrew's] header," Leigh said. "He had gotten the initial header, and I just snuck back post, and no one was marking me up, so I just put it over their two defenders."

In the first half, Potomac had more offensive opportunities, but it was Osbourn Park that struck first as Dykstra scored off an assist from Julio Alva with about 12 minutes remaining.

The Panthers answered about eight minutes later when senior Douglas Boateng hit a sliding shot from the top of the box.

In the second half, the scoring chances favored the host Yellow Jackets, but they were unable to punch through the go-ahead goal, a sequence exemplified by Dykstra's shot that struck the right goal post before being cleared.

Undeterred, Osbourn Park kept the pressure on, an approach Dykstra said teams should expect in region play. "If we show up to play," he said, "we're gonna be the team that's gonna come through."

Note: Osbourn Park picked up a win last week when Annandale, a 3-0 winner over the Yellow Jackets in April, was forced to forfeit victories for using an ineligible player.
