She has chubby cheeks, a wide smile, a limited vocabulary -- and for now, no name or family.

D.C. police are seeking the identity of a little girl who was left with the city's child welfare agency this month. Police said the girl was taken to authorities by a man and a woman who said the mother had dropped her off with them and disappeared. She appears to be about 2, police said.

The child was dressed in a powder blue and cream terry cloth outfit when she arrived at the agency's office. She has been placed in foster care.

The girl is at ease around strangers and seems very comfortable and happy in her current surroundings, authorities said. She has not cried for her mother, father or anyone else, said Mindy L. Good, a spokeswoman for D.C. Child and Family Services Agency.

"This is a very rare case for us, but it is our job to make sure this little girl is taken care of," Good said.

The girl was left at the agency's office about 4:30 p.m. May 10. According to Good, a couple from Southwest Washington told authorities that the girl's mother had left her with them two days earlier and that the mother said she was going to a police station to file a domestic violence report. The couple said the woman had not returned, Good said. They were unable to help police find her.

The agency ran medical tests, but turned up nothing that would identify the girl. She is about three feet tall, weighs 33 pounds and is in very good health, Good said.

The girl is not talking very much, Good said. She speaks mostly in single-syllable words that aren't pronounced very well, Good said.

D.C. police said yesterday that they are investigating the couple that took the girl to the agency and other aspects of the case. They are asking anyone with information to call police at 202-727-9099.

The case is reminiscent of one that shook Baltimore this month.

In Baltimore, a woman called authorities to report that a stranger had left his daughter with her May 5 and never come back. The 3-year-old girl was immediately placed in foster care while authorities tried to identify her and her family.

Publicity about the case turned up the parents, who are now in a custody battle. Her mother said the girl was abducted by the father a year earlier. The father said that the girl has been with him her whole life and that she was with a babysitter when he was arrested during a drug raid.

This little girl, who appears to be about 2, was left with D.C. authorities in early May.
