Athlete of the Year


The four-time All-Met ended her spectacular high school career with state titles in the 800 and 1,600. She captured the county titles in the 800 and 3,200, and she was the runner-up in the mile at the Penn Relays. She will run for Stanford next year.

First Team

BRITTANY GRIFFIN, Meade, Sr.: Griffin was the state runner-up in the long jump. She was a triple winner at the county meet in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and long jump.

KATHERINE HANNUM, Severna Park, Sr. : Hannum was the county runner-up in the 400 and was fifth in the 200 meters. She also ran on the winning 4x400-meter relay.

KASEY JAMISON, Broadneck, Soph.: Jamison was the county champion in the 1,600 meters, and she also took fourth in the 800 and ran on the second-place 4x400 relay.

DARLENE MATTHEWS, Arundel, Sr.: Matthews won the county triple jump championship and finished second in the long jump and the shot put.

MON'TWAYNISE McLAUCHLIN, Meade, Fr.: At the county championships, McLauchlin was second in the 100 and sixth in the 200. She was part of winning 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

MARISA McPHAIL, Arundel, Soph.: McPhail was the county runner-up and 4A East Region champion in the 3,200 meters. She was part of the Wildcats' third-place 4x800 relay at the county meet.

HEATHER MILLFORD, Chesapeake, Jr.: Despite a broken foot, Millford was able to pull out county and regional championships in the pole vault, including a county record tying vault of 9 feet 6 inches.

STEPHANIE NEWTON, Severna Park, Sr.: Newton was the county runner-up in the 1,600 meters and eighth in that event at the state meet. She was sixth in the state in the 3,200.

ELANI ODEYALE, Meade, Jr.: At the county meet, Odeyale finished second in the 200 meters and fourth in the 400 meters and was part of the Mustangs' winning 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

KRYSTA PORTERLOTT, South River, Soph.: Porterlott was the county champion in the high jump with a leap of five feet. She jumped the same height to take second in the 4A East Region.

ASHLEY RIGGS, Southern, Jr.: Riggs won the 2A state championship in the discus and took second in the shot put. She was regional and county champ in both events.

JENNINE STRANGE, Severna Park, Soph.: Strange won an exciting race to capture the 400-meter championship at the 3A state meet. She was county champ in the 400 and runner-up in the 800.

ROBIN YERKES, Broadneck, Soph.: Yerkes was the Bruins' top sprinter, winning the 100 and 200 at the county championships. She was eighth in the state in the 100.
