P Anthony Gibbons, Lackey, Senior

Won seven games for a Lackey team that had not won that many in more than five years. Had a 1.22 ERA with 62 strikeouts in 59 innings. Batted .375 with 13 RBI. Will play at Doane College in Nebraska.

P Ben Sobocinski, McDonough, Junior

Used the area's best fastball to go 7-1 with two saves and strike out 85 in 67 innings. While at shortstop, batted .476 with 23 RBI.

C Matt Hoepfl, McDonough, Junior

Caught every inning for the Rams, who advanced to the Maryland 3A South final. Batted .360 with 14 RBI. Threw out 60 percent of attempted base-stealers.

1B Joe Klein, Patuxent, Junior

Hit .317 with 10 RBI and 10 runs while batting in the eighth spot in the lineup. Was the Panthers' most consistent pitcher, going 5-1 with a 1.11 ERA, and had a 22-inning scoreless streak.

2B Mike Higgs, Westlake, Senior

Three-year starter had his best season, batting .373 with 18 runs. Drove in 10 runs and was 13 for 13 on stolen-base attempts. Will play at Frostburg State.

3B Paul Burch, Leonardtown, Junior

Vocal leader of a senior-laden team that won the Maryland 3A South title. Repeat All-Extra batted .380 with 19 RBI, 11 extra-base hits and 28 runs. As a pitcher, went 5-0 with two saves and a 1.27 ERA.

OF Averill Butler, Thomas Stone, Junior

Had two game-winning hits in Thomas Stone's last at-bat in the Maryland 4A East Region tournament. Led the Cougars in batting (.364), slugging (.576) and on-base percentage (.488).

OF Jason Seufert, Northern, Senior

Three-year starter nearly led the Patriots across the board offensively. Batted .453 and slugged .660. Had five assists this season and only one error since 2002.

OF Brandon Short, Chopticon, Sophomore

One of the most feared hitters in the SMAC batted .462 and slugged .734 with three home runs and 27 RBI. Stole nine bases and had two six-RBI games.

UT Kurt Bruce, Patuxent, Sophomore

Patuxent's youngest starter batted cleanup and hit .423 with 18 RBI and 12 runs. Went 4-1 with a 3.25 ERA.

UT Ian Schwalenberg, Calvert, Sophomore

Highlighted Calvert's young core, batting a team-high .337 with seven doubles and 12 RBI while playing shortstop. Went 4-2 with a 1.75 ERA and struck out 45 in 44 innings.

UT Flynn Stachowski, Leonardtown, Senior

Led the Raiders' deep lineup with a .414 average and 22 RBI from the cleanup spot. Was the Raiders' workhorse on the mound, going 4-3 with a 2.17 ERA. Struck out 53 in 52 innings. Will play at Midland College in Texas.
