Catherine A. Hess, Michael D. Higgins, W. Dan Kuhne, Shelly A. Stickell and David S. Mack recently received 2004 Teaching Excellence Awards from the Anne Arundel Community College Student Association.

Hess, of Arnold, is an associate professor of mathematics and received the full-time faculty teaching excellence award.

Higgins, of Severn, is an assistant professor of mathematics and received the rookie professor of the year award. Kuhne, a part-time art instructor from Edgewater, and Stickell, a part-time legal studies instructor from Lutherville, received the part-time faculty teaching excellence award. Mack, of Baltimore, is a part-time political science and history instructor. He is also the adviser for the college's student delegation to the Maryland student legislature and received the adviser of the year award.

Hospice of the Chesapeake, a nonprofit organization that provides bereavement and palliative care and support services for Anne Arundel and Prince George's county residents, was recently awarded a $350,000 grant from the Kresge Foundation. The organization will use the grant to construct a residential hospice facility in Southern Anne Arundel County. Hospice of the Chesapeake was one of 47 organizations to receive grants from the Kresge Foundation this year.

Tristram R. Thomas of Severna Park and Lacy R. Kline of Severn recently received Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarships. Thomas, a McDonogh School junior, and Kline, an Old Mill High School junior, each received a $2,500 scholarship for demonstrating community service and leadership skills. Thomas and Kline, among seven Maryland residents to receive the awards, were selected from 4,500 applicants. Scholarship recipients had to have at least a 2.75 grade-point average to qualify.

Amy Paronto of Odenton recently received a Fulbright Award from the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. The 2003 St. Mary's College of Maryland graduate will use the award to study the social protest aspects of German punk rock. A German major, Paronto will teach English and American studies in Thueringen, Germany.
