Athlete of the Year

TIMISHA GOMEZ, Long Reach, Sr.

Two-time All-County selection placed first in the 100-meter high hurdles (14.9 seconds), 300-meter intermediate hurdles (44.43) and triple jump (36 feet 81/2 inches) to lead her team to the county title. Gomez also won those events at the 3A East Region meet, then capped her career at the state meet by winning the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 44.36. She was second in the 100-meter high hurdles (14.76), triple jump (37-11/2) and 400-meter relay (49.56).

"I think I do my best when I'm under pressure," said Gomez, who will attend Saint Joseph's on a basketball scholarship this fall. "I knew this was my last year running track, and I wanted to go out strong."

Coach of the Year

BRIAN FUNK, Atholton

Named head coach just two weeks before the team's first practice, Funk revitalized a struggling program and led the Raiders to fifth place at the county and 2A state meets.

Funk's rigorous practices and training regimen helped transform freshmen Alison Smith, Kate Nicholson and Nicole Robinson into some of the state's top distance runners, giving Atholton a solid foundation for the next few seasons.

"I think what people saw this year was just the beginning of Atholton track," Funk said. "It took some time to get used to each other, but I think we have something special happening at Atholton, and I'm excited for the future."
