Player of the Year
MATT NICOLA, Glenelg, Sr.
Attackman scored a team-high 58 goals to give him a school-record 120 for his career.
Nicola, who also posted 17 assists, was the team's leading scorer each of the past three seasons. He posted three or more goals in each game of his team's school-record 15-game winning streak, which ended with a loss to Pikesville in the Maryland 2A/1A final.
"Matt's about as consistent as you can get because almost every game, he has done something to make us a better team, either by scoring or passing to someone else for a goal," Coach Mike Williams said of Nicola, who will play for Roanoke College. "He's one of the best players this school has ever had."
Coach of the Year
MIKE WILLIAMS, Glenelg
After guiding the Gladiators from 1975 to '81, Williams came back for a second stint last year, then had his most successful season this spring.
Glenelg won its first county title outright since 1985. The Gladiators (15-2) were 29-5 with a pair of region titles during the past two seasons.
"I know Coach Williams had played a big part in me going on to play in college, and I know he's done the same thing for a lot of his players," Nicola said. "It's sad because we all really wanted to win the state title for him because we know how hard he works."
