Machete attack arrest: A third person has been arrested in last month's machete attack on a 16-year-old Alexandria area youth, Fairfax County police said yesterday. The man is believed to be a member of the Mara Salvatrucha street gang.
Jose Cruz, 19, of the 4900 block of Manitoba Drive in Annandale was arrested Thursday about 8 p.m. in the Orleans Village townhouse complex off Little River Turnpike. He was charged with aggravated malicious wounding and participating in gang activity. Hayner R. Flores, 18, and a 17-year-old whose name was not released face the same charges in the May 10 attack on a reputed rival gang member. Four of his fingers were severed and he suffered deep cuts to his head and back. Flores and the 17-year-old also are members of Mara Salvatrucha, police said.
Police impersonator: Arlington County detectives are investigating two robberies in which a man impersonated a police or security officer and took cash from his victims.
On June 11, police said, a man in plain clothes approached a woman in the 1300 block of South 28th Street, flashed an ID and asked for the victim's wallet. He returned it, but without the cash.
In a second incident June 13, a man approached two men in the 4200 block of Columbia Pike and flashed an ID and asked for the victims' wallets, police said, then proceeded to take their cash.

Mother charged: An Engleside area woman was arrested and charged with felony child abuse yesterday for leaving her 2-year-old son locked in a vehicle for 15 minutes while she shopped, when the midday temperature was 95 degrees, Fairfax County police said.
Another shopper at the Wal-Mart at 7910 Richmond Hwy. spotted the boy in the vehicle with the windows almost completely rolled up, about 1:30 p.m. The boy was taken to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital and later released to his father. Elanor Sodergren, 25, of the 8700 block of Walutes Circle, was released on an unsecured bond.
* A 25-year-old man was fatally stabbed near a Langley Park gas station last night, Prince George's County police said. The man, who police did not identify last night, was found dead in the 1300 block of University Boulevard just before 7 p.m., said Cpl. Joe Merkel, a police spokesman. The man suffered at least one stab wound to the upper body and was dead at the scene, Merkel said. Police had no motive or suspects last night.
* A 33-year-old Virginia man was stabbed to death in Southeast Washington on Thursday evening, D.C. police said yesterday.
D.C. police and paramedics were summoned about 5:15 p.m. to Danny's Carryout in the 3700 block of Minnesota Avenue SE, where they found Carlos Sly suffering from stab wounds. He had driven himself to the carryout to seek help after being stabbed at an unknown location, police said.
Sly, of the 6000 block of Amherst Avenue in Springfield, was rushed to Prince George's Hospital Center, where he died, police said.
