Outdoor Film Festival
The City of Alexandria and Comcast will hold a free outdoor family film festival July 30-Aug. 1 at Ben Brenman Park, 5000 Duke St.
"Grease" will be shown July 30; "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," July 31; and "Shrek," Aug. 1.
Vendors and area restaurants will sell popcorn, homemade lemonade and food beginning at 7 p.m., with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Campagna Center. All movies begin about 8 p.m.
Families are invited to bring blankets or lawn chairs. Admission is free.
In the event of rain, the event will be canceled.
Meals for Students
The Alexandria city public schools' Food and Nutrition Services will sponsor the USDA Summer Food Service Program at all of its summer-school sites.
Free breakfasts will be provided to all enrolled elementary summer-school students weekdays through July 30. Free breakfast and lunch will be provided to all enrolled secondary and high school summer-school students weekdays through Aug. 6. Free breakfast and lunch will be provided to all enrolled kindergarten prep students weekdays Aug. 9-20.
Free breakfasts will be served to any child in the community younger than 18 at Mount Vernon Community School and Douglas MacArthur Elementary School from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Monday through Friday. Free breakfasts will also be served to children at the following elementary schools from 9:15 to 9:45 a.m. Monday through Friday: James K. Polk, Patrick Henry, Cora Kelly and Jefferson-Houston. Free breakfasts will be offered daily to any child in the community at Francis C. Hammond Middle School and George Washington Middle School between 9:30 and 10 a.m., and lunches will be served from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Signs will be posted at the main entrance of each school and at each entrance where meals will be served. Meals must be consumed in designated spaces at each site.
