Restoring the Shoreline

Spa Creek Conservancy will build a shoreline stabilization model from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Amos Garrett Park, at the end of Amos Garrett Boulevard off West Street. The public is invited to listen to and participate in the environmental exercise.

Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Chesapeake Bay Foundation scientists will demonstrate why "soft" shoreline restoration is important and how it can be applied in various settings by installing coconut fiber "biologs," backfilling with soil and planting marsh grasses and other vegetation. Volunteers will install a rain garden below a cut in the street curb to divert storm water and will prune existing shrubbery, replace dead trees and add native species to flower beds. Mayor Ellen O. Moyer will unveil a plaque rededicating the park to Annapolis's first mayor, Amos Garrett.

Tools and materials will be furnished, and refreshments will be served. For more information, or to volunteer, call project director Mel Wilkins at 410-721-7991.
