Redskins Alter Schedule
The Redskins have announced changes to their Ashburn training camp schedule, which is mostly open to the public until Aug. 11. Tuesday's practice scheduled for 4:30 p.m. is now closed. A practice scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday has been canceled and replaced by a 2 p.m. practice that day.
Chamber Backing Baseball
The board of directors of the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce has voted to support locating a Major League Baseball team in Loudoun and a ballpark at the proposed Diamond Lake development site and is urging all county officials, businesses and residents to do so.
"Loudoun County is a perfect place for this new baseball stadium," said chamber Chairman Louis Matrone, citing figures showing that Loudoun is the fastest-growing county in the United States and that more than 2 million people live within 20 miles of the proposed Dulles site.
Hillsboro Opposes Power Lines
The Hillsboro Town Council has passed a unanimous resolution urging Dominion Virginia Power Co. to find an alternative route for power lines being considered for the Washington & Old Dominion trail or to consider burying them.
"The proposed transmission line will have significant negative impacts on neighborhoods adjacent to the W&OD Regional Park including the Old and Historic District in the Town of Leesburg, Paeonian Springs, Hamilton and Purcellville," said the resolution, which was passed July 20.
The trail is "highly valued . . . as a scenic recreational site" and is a "tourist attraction generating revenue for the entire Northern Virginia region," it said.
The resolution said the transmission lines would "impinge on the natural setting of the trail," destroy 26,000 trees and eliminate the bridle path.
Dominion Virginia is considering an 11-mile transmission line along the last wooded portion of the 45-mile trail, which runs from Arlington to Purcellville.
Bridge Done; Road to Reopen
Shelburne Glebe Road at Goose Creek is scheduled to be reopened to motorists by tomorrow. It has been closed since March for bridge construction.
The Virginia Department of Transportation has replaced the temporary one-lane bridge that was installed 10 years ago after a flood destroyed the original structure. The new two-lane truss bridge is similar in appearance and in keeping with the historic nature of the original bridge.
The new bridge is about 100 feet long and 20 feet wide to meet the needs of emergency vehicles and farm equipment.
Inmates Hurt Breaking Up Fight
Two inmates at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center in Leesburg were injured Wednesday after they tried to separate two female inmates who were fighting.
The inmates were in the day room just before dinner when Joyce Lockette, 46, of Georgia went after another inmate with a pen, the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office said. One of the two inmates who tried to separate them, a 24-year-old Ashburn woman, was cut by the pen and taken to Loudoun Hospital Center for treatment. The other received minor injuries and was treated at the jail.
A sheriff's deputy was able to separate the women.
Lockette, who was being held on a malicious wounding charge, was taken to another facility, and charges were pending in the incident, the Sheriff's Office said.
